Integrating server and storage virtualization
In order to reduce costs, more and more users are looking to server and storage virtualization to enable consolidation, improve utilization, simplify operations, improve performance, and deliver improved data protection and availability. While server and storage virtualization can be implemented separately, an integrated end-to-end server to storage virtualization can drive higher efficiencies for business continuity and disaster recovery.
Today, Hitachi is announcing the integration of Hitachi storage virtualization and array based replication with the virtualization and clustering capabilities of the Microsoft Hyper-V server platform. This product is called Hitachi Storage Cluster, HSC, for Microsoft Hyper-V.
The second announcement is SRA2 for VMware, the second generation Hitachi Storage Replication Adapter which extends Hitachi’s support for the VMware Site Recovery Manager to include the local and remote replication and automatic failover of the Adaptable Modular Storage (AMS) family in addition to the existing support provided by the Universal Storage Platform V and VM.
An integrated, systems based approach to replication off loads the processing, management, and bandwidth requirements for the movement of data from the application or virtualization server to the storage array. Now when virtual servers initiate replication or fail over for application recovery, the movement and fail over of the data is executed by Hitachi storage products at Fibre channel speeds, freeing up the resources of the server. When virtualized with the USP V/VM, heterogeneous storage can participate in this integration.
