Sneak Peek Into Our Tech Future

Some of Intel’s top researchers are gathered inside the Computer History Museum Thursday to show of their latest projects aimed at helping future gadgets, computers and just about anything that connects to the Internet (cars, schools, homes) harness the ever improving performance of Intel processors.

On Wednesday, I joined the Research@Intel day set up crew and captured some photos and video interviews (will go on this Intel Labs playlist)with researchers who are working on things I’m very interested in: small mobile Internet devices, Internet browsing, HD video and WiMAX wireless broadband technology.

Research@Intel day is the annual science fair, where Intel executives and business group leaders, industry analysts and the media come see what’s cookin’ inside Intel Labs. Intel spends several billion dollars every year on research and development.

Technology doesn’t just happen, it’s tinkered with, built upon, refined and all along the way great minds — from engineering to social sciences — devote hours of hard work and collaboration. Without this, the benefits of Moore’s Law may not have survived so long…and things like Wi-Fi may not advanced so quickly into our lives.

Since joining Intel, I’ve seen computer chips cross the 1 GHz performance mark, then double to 2 GHz and today beyond 3 GHz. From single to multicore processors where performance keeps betting better — and that means faster, stronger AND more energy efficient.

We hear about this all the time. This is the core of Intel at work. The other side of Intel is driven by technology wizards who put their dreams and ideas to practice so that some day technology will help us even more, especially in the areas of health care, the environment and yes…fun and entertainment.

I’ll be there tomorrow, and you can follow on Twitter @IntelLabs or #intelRDday, and you can watch some livestreamed video from the event. Please join the chat section of the live video stream or leave comments on the blog, sharing what inspired you most from Research@Intel day.
