Intel® AMT 5.1.1 SDK
by admin on Aug.12, 2009, under Storage
New Download Available: Intel® AMT 5.1.1 SDK
Hi – It&aposs been a while since we talked about the latest Intel® AMT Software Development Kit. Not a whole lot has changed moving from Intel® AMT 5.0 to Intel® AMT 5.1.1. For AMT 5.1.1 the changes were mostly bug fixes. For more information regarding known issues, please refer to the readme file in the Intel® AMT 5.1.1 SDK.
Main features in the 5.1.1 SDK:
- Secure Audit Log (also known as "Access Monitor") – Configuration and samples (4.0 & 5.0).
- Client Initiated Remote access (CIRA) – Manageability Presence Server (MPS) sample provided, configuration support & most samples updated to support working remotely (4.0 & 5.0).
- Network Access Protection (NAP) – System Health Validator (SHV) sample (4.0 & 5.0).
- Samples for additional DASH 1.0 profiles – &aposRole Based authorization (ACL)&apos, WS-Eventing & DASH Discovery support (3.2 – apart from WS-Eventing, 4.0 & 5.0).
- USB configuration has been updated to support many configuration options.
- Wireless configuration WS-Management support (4.0).
- New event log interface (3.2, 4.0 & 5.0).
- Alarm clock feature (5.1).
- DASH 1.0 support (5.1). This change has caused some backward compatibility issues. Additional information can be found in Intel AMT WS-Management Capabilities Comparison.pdf document, in the DOCS folder.
- IMRSDK.Dll can now work with a Certificate singed by a root CA with a 4096 key & SHA 512 algorithm (5.1).
Notes:
The following Microsoft hot fixes are required to work correctly in some situations:
- KB889388 – Digest DLL crash when connecting to an Intel AMT machine from 2 applications simultaneously.
- KB899900 – For using Kerberos authentication to connect to an Intel AMT device.
- KB908209 – For using Kerberos authentication to connect to an Intel AMT device using Internet Explorer.
- KB842773 – For using digest authentication from a Windows application to connect to an Intel AMT device on which Kerberos users are configured.
- Note: this is included in Windows XP* SP2 and in Windows Server 2003* SP1.
SOAP APIs: As we all know, WS-MAN is slowly replacing the old SOAP interface and in this version of the SDK, several previously existing SOAP commands are now deprecated. The samples in this SDK release only use new API calls. This means that the samples in this SDK release (or applications developed using them) might not work with machines using Intel AMT releases older than 4.0. SOAP commands supported from Intel AMT 1.0 and deprecated in Intel AMT 2.0 are not supported by Intel AMT 4.0 devices. These functions are supported by the WSDL files for working with previous generations of Intel AMT.
- Exceptions to this are the Discovery sample and the Configuration Server sample, which demonstrate, respectively, how to find Intel AMT machines and how to configure them. Both of these samples will work with Intel AMT machines regardless of their release version.
- For samples demonstrating the usage of older (deprecated) SOAP API, please refer to older releases of the Intel AMT SDK.
Ahem….. This might be a great place to pitch the High Level API package that we have recently placed onto our Manageability Community Web Page. The High Level APIs are built on top of WS-MAN and are intended to remove the complexities of writing AMT software using the regular SDK samples (means you don&apost have to be a WS-MAN guru to write code for AMT!!.) While this package does not yet support all features, it does support HW Inventory, Storage, Power Control, and soon it will support Redirection. The dlls can be brought into an SDK project so that the developer can choose between implementing a feature using the SDK samples, or the High Level API Samples. Our intern, Stephen Hibbert has implemented features using the HLAPI package – see his blog here and you can also read up on Aharon&aposs blogs about the HLAPI package. We would love to get feedback from you!

Coffee Shops Unplug Laptop Users; WiMAX Plugs Them Back In

Coffee Shops Unplug Laptop Users; WiMAX Plugs Them Back In
You may have seen the recent report from The Wall Street Journal on how many coffee shops in New York City are putting an end to computer usage in their stores. For those of us, especially people who may work from home and want a change of scenery, or students taking a break from the library, coffee shops and laptops go hand-in-hand. In fact, it’s rare to be in a coffee shop and not see someone on their computer and more than likely, on the Internet the majority of that time.
While it is understandable shops are frustrated people will sit in their store for hours, buying only a cup of coffee, there is an alternative to banning laptops from cafes. Like a dog tethered to a leash, consumers are restricted when it comes to Wi-Fi hot spots, normally found inside, when trying to get on the Internet. But here is the shameless plug… mobile WiMAX is just that – mobile!
When a story like this is written, it reminds me how lucky I am to live in Portland, OR where WiMAX is a reality and the combination of coffee shops and the Internet are so last season. I can use my computer and get a super-fast wireless broadband connection while sitting outside on a park bench, riding the MAX public transportation or even on the freeway at 60 miles an hour (in the passenger seat of course). In places like Baltimore, people can even connect to the Internet with WiMAX on boats!
With WiMAX, the possibilities for connectivity are endless. In addition to my own fair city, Baltimore, Las Vegas and Atlanta can enjoy WiMAX today and Clearwire is slated to launch service in New York next year, so soon New Yorkers can soon have their coffee and log on too!

Traveling Geeks Hit UK with Intel Inside

Traveling Geeks Hit UK with Intel Inside
Sure it’s nice and sunny these days in the San Francisco Bay Area, but almost everyone I know has been bitten by the travel bug.
If the UK is one place you’re thinking about, then check out the Traveling Geeks, as dozen bloggers meet technology innovators, startup companies, educators and online networking enthusiasts from London and Cambridge to share best practices for online communication.
The Geeks are in the UK from July 5-11, and Intel is co-sponsoring the trip as an extension of the Intel Insiders program.
Intel is involved to learn along side these geeks, introduce them to people from Intel who are playing a role in invigorating innovation in the UK, and have them test out a few new mobile Internet devices during their travels.
Traveling Geek and Intel Insider Tom Foremski is keen on:
…the startup culture here in the UK and how it differs from Silicon Valley. I’m always looking for what makes Silicon Valley different from anywhere else and why it is so difficult to create Silicon Valley-like regions around the world.
Clearly, to create a sustainable center of innovation it takes more than building a business park around a university and injecting some startup capital. The answer must lie in the culture of Silicon Valley. But can that culture be exported? Do regional innovation centers have unique cultures specific to their particular brand of innovation?
We share with the Traveling Geeks a handful of Intel Capital strategic investments made in UK-based companies, including WiMAX technology company <a href=”http://www.freedom4.com/ http://pipexwireless.com“>Freedom4, cellular engineering company ip access and Plastic Logic, a plastics specialist helping to create cutting edge designs for all kinds of devices.
We also factored into one of the stops on their busy Geek agenda a breakfast with Tristan Wilkinson, Director for Public Sector in the UK for Intel EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa).
Tristan is influencing innovation in government policy, particularly around education and digital inclusion. As the UK government published its Digital Britain Report, it named Tristan and Martha Lane-Fox as the two Digital Inclusion Ambassadors to oversee a taskforce aimed at ensuring the UK is at the leading edge of the global digital economy. The UK government’s vision includes:
- ensuring a first rate digital and communications infrastructure that helps promote and protect talent and innovation in the UK’s creative industries
- modernizing TV and radio frameworks, support local news, and new policies to maximize social and economic benefits from digital technologies.
Other stops along the way from London to Cambridge include:
- Reboot Britain — framing the challenges and seizing the opportunities to benefit from innovation in the UK
- BT— BT is the Official Communications Services Partner and a Sustainability Partner for the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games.
- Guardian — The UK’s newspaper born in 1821 and today is a leading source rich online media
- Skype — a UK-based software company that lets millions of people around the world make free or low-cost calls over the Internet.
- TechCrunch Europa Awards — tech innovation awards honoring the best tech companies and startups across the web and mobile scene from across Europe, the Middle East and Africa
We met several times with the Geeks prior to their trip, and just hours before many were leaving San Francisco for the UK, we handed over a few small computers powered by the tiny, mighty Intel Atom processor
- a UMID, also featuring the mighty Intel Atom processor
- two Aigo MIDs (one from SN France)
- two BenQ MIDs (available through Italy’s TIM)
- two Viliv S5 MIDs, which are available in the U.S.
- an Acer Aspire One netbook that they could giveaway to one of their Tweetup attendees
Mobile Internet Devices are designed for bringing you the full internet experience in your pocket.
And with more wireless service providers — Italy, France and other parts of world — are selling these devices — we wanted to have the Traveling Geeks road test them and share the with new friends in the UK.
We asked the Geeks to try the MIDs, and if possible, use them to create and share some of the Traveling Geeks experience.
Their feedback will be shared with Intel’s Ultra Mobility Group, the team working with MID makers around the world.
