The Intel Visual Computing Institute Opens in Saarbrucken!

This is a landmark day for the virtual world. Intel has essentially made a 12 million dollar investment to make sure that world "looks, acts, and feels" real with the opening of the Intel VCI this morning.  According to the reports, we&aposll be plugging in some of Europe&aposs (and beyond) greatest minds into the Tera-scale research program - making that Holy Grail experience of realistic "human-like" interaction with our virtual counterparts that much closer to reality.

All the Neal Stephenson fans (msyelf included) are already looking over the Happy Hour menu at Black Sun.

Of course – virtual worlds aren&apost the only beneficiary here… Medical imaging, Financial services – anything that requires heavy-duty data modeling will benefit.

Myself? I want to plug in and run applications like Maya, Softimage and Cakewalk&aposs Sonar on the biggest, baddest virtual workstation in the universe (or Metaverse).

One particularly interesting piece of info from the Visual Institute opening this morning that is bound to get some notice is that Justin Rattner showed off a shot of the Larrabee die.  That ought to generate a few additions to The Grist Mill on the Visual Computing Developers Site..
